Update!

Hey everyone. So I'm back (finally) with a short little eBay and life update!

College is now only 6 weeks away! I was so very excited about it, until today... but, more on that later!

EBay has been OK. Sales are slow since it's summer, but they're still trickling in. I actually just ran a 40% off sale, with no luck. It was crazy actually. Sales were terrible even at their low prices!! So I've decided to only run 15% off and accept most best offers.
June profits ended up around $700, which I'm happy about, but it's no where near the $2,000 that I'd like to be at. I had $300 in expenses last month, so that really hurt me.

On the Fourth of July I went with my family and spent the day at the goodwill outlet! I bought around 107 pounds of goodies for $90. This got me over 120 pieces of clothes, hangers, 10 or so purses and bags, and 8 pairs of shoes. Here's some pics.

Now, onto the life part. Back a couple weeks ago, I had my college orientation. I was told to go and meet with someone in the financial aid office to discuss a matter on my account. I was told that one of my scholarships (the big one!!) was removed from my account because I'm a Kentucky resident and I'm attending a school in Tennessee. The lady then told me I should receive the money back because I graduated from a home school program in Tennessee.

Fast forward to today. After emailing and calling the lady a few times this week, she finally got back to me today. I was told that I would not be receiving my scholarship back and that being homeschooled has really hurt me. So to say the least, I'm furious. This is the SECOND scholarship that they've taken away from me and also, homeschooling has been the absolute best thing that's ever happened to me. My college was 100% paid for, but now I'm going to have to take out student loans.. Joy...

So that's what's going on with me.. Nothing too exciting. Hopefully I'll be back soon with a more cheerful post.

  1. That is just plain wrong. Have you asked to speak to anyone else in financial aid and scholarships? I wouldn't stop with that one lady. Sometimes there is another way to get the same result.

    1. Yes, I have called most of the colleges departments and I've even called the states financial aid dept. It really stinks!

  2. Oof! Welcome to real life, right?

My parents were able to help me with 4 out of 5 years of school, and I gave them all of my 3 co-op salaries (~50k pre-tax total). In the end, I had to get about 30k in loans for my last year. Chemical Engineering BS/MS programs are expensive!

Anywho, we ended up paying it off quickly. So in the end, I wish I had the ability to get better scholarships, but as long as you aren't choosing a major which doesn't' pay well at all and you're decent with your money (you seem to be), you'll be fine.

A loan can help out a bunch when your other option is to delay until you have the cash on hand to pay for tuition! The worst part is that you put all the work in to get the loan in the first place. If they just told you up front "can't do it" then you wouldn't have wasted all that time. :|

  3. Sounds like discrimination to me. It shouldn't matter if you were homeschooled or not. Your grades are your grades.

  4. Nandry - has Jay contacted you about calling on the thrifting community to help you out via a gofundme page or a tip jar? You've given a lot to this community and I'm sure many of us would like to do what we can. It might not replace your entire scholarship but it can get you going. That is, after all, what a community is for - to help each other out!

    1. Yes! I'm not one for accepting money from my readers, but since I've had so many emails, I've opened a gofundme just for the ones who want to help me out. I'm just so overwhelmed by the awesomeness of all of my readers! Here's the link: http://www.gofundme.com/theteenthrifter1

      Thanks for reading!

  5. Nandry,

Are you guys members of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association? If so, I'd contact them and see if they have any suggestions for you. Even if you're not a member, there's a lot of helpful info on there for us homeschoolers. I think their website is hslda dot org.

This really stinks, but I wouldn't give up just yet. Hopefully, you just ran into one of those wonderful "anti-homeschooling" people in financial aid.;-(

    1. No we aren't, but I'll definitely check into it.

I honestly feel like I'm in limbo. I live so close to the school I'm wanting to attend, but since I'm 5 miles across the state line, I can't get any money. It's insane. Hopefully God works it all out!
